Australian Bernard Tomic will most likely miss next month's Australian Open, after turning down the opportunity to play in the tournament's wildcard playoff.

After slumping to No.142 in the Tomic, the wildcard playoff is his best chance to enter the first Grand Slam of the year, with the winner of the 16-player field guaranteed entry into the open.

Tomic's name was missing from the field announced on Thursday, with the tournament beginning on Monday, despite Tennis Australia publicly stating the 25-year-old was offered a spot.
