Australia has lost its Fed Cup World Group play off tie against the Ukraine in Kharkiv, 3-0.

Ukraine took a 2-0 lead after the opening day of play with Lesia Tesurenko defeating Daria Gavrilova 6-2, 6-3, while Evina Svitolina defeated Ash Barty 4-6 6-1 6-2.

Svitlolina then backed up her day one win, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gavrilova in the reverse singles.

Barty and Casey Dellacqua then won the doubles to earn a consolation win for Australia, but the second reverse singles was not required, with the result beyond doubt.

“I couldn’t have asked for more from Casey and Ash at the end,” team captain Alicia Molik said.

“But I have to admire the Ukraine team, they’re great competitors and fighters which is why they’re such good players.”
