Roger Federer's brilliant 2017 and recent form over Rafael Nadal has continued, with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Spaniard in the Shanghai Masters final.

Federer clinched his 94th career title and fifth consecutive victory over Nadal.

However, Nadal still leads their head-to-head 23-15.

“We didn't think maybe we were going to have the year we did, I definitely didn't,” Federer said post-match.

“It's nice to share this court with you today and I hope there are more to come in the tournaments we've got left.

“It's been a pleasure playing against you here today.”

Nadal, as always, was gracious in defeat, admitting he was simply beaten by a better player on the day.

“I could maybe have done some things better,” said Nadal.

“Of course was not the best match of the week for me, but when someone plays better than you in most of the things that really matter in this sport, then it's tough."
