Young gun Jordan Thompson has given Australia the lead after the opening rubber of the Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic.

Thompson, making his debut for Australia at Davis Cup level, defeated Jiri Vesely 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to give Australia a 1-0 lead ahead of the second rubber.

“I'm lost for words. I really can't describe this feeling,” Thompson said following the win.

“I think it's the biggest (moment) of my career. The summer's been pretty good, but playing for your country is amazing, and getting us off to a 1-0 lead is even better.”

Nick Kyrgios is next on court, facing Kan Satral.
