Bernard Tomic has kicked off 2016 with a straight sets win in his opening match at the Brisbane International on Tuesday night.

Tomic defeated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-3 to set up a clash with Czech veteran Radek Stepanek.

The 23-year-old was broken by Mahut midway through the first set to trail 4-3, before winning the next three games to claim the opening set.

He then managed to claim a break in the second to see off the world No.71.

The young Australia said after the match he is feeling confident heading into 2016 and aiming to crack the world's top 10.

"I'd like to reach the top 10...if I stay healthy and consistent like I did last year there's a chance to achieve this," Tomic said.

Tomic is currently ranked No.18 in the world.
